Author Katherine Kinzler, Professor of Psychology at the University of Chicago, will discuss her much lauded new book, “How You Say It: Why We Judge Others by the Way They Talk and the Costs of This Hidden Bias”

How do language, accent and dialect influence our identities, perceptions and behavior towards others?  Why is linguistic discrimination often overlooked?   In what ways can exposure to multiple languages help children transcend prejudices and bridge cultural divisions in our society?  Come to learn the answers to these questions and to reaffirm your ongoing support for the Hurley School.  In the words of Professor Kinzler, “language can divide us, but it can also bring us together.”

Welcome Back to School Year 2020/21

Dear Hurley Families,

On behalf of the Neighborhood Parents for the Hurley School, we want to welcome you to our community.

NPHS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that acts as the development arm of the Hurley School. We are current parents, community members, and volunteers who believe in bilingual public education and see the need to enhance the academic experience of all students at the Hurley. Our mission is to bridge the gaps in funding that the Hurley receives from the Boston Public School System.  The money we raise will pay for reading specialists, music education, classroom materials, social/emotional support programs, and more.  We have plans to invest in the school’s infrastructure (including the auditorium, playground and STEM rooms) as well as technology.

NPHS raises money through an annual appeal, and through fundraising events.  Due to COVID, this year will look different as we rely more on virtual events and experiences.  However, our mission remains the same: to raise funds to bridge the gap between the BPS budget and what Hurley students need and deserve during this time.  We have already helped provide paper books and other materials so that our students can start the school year off with supplies that will enhance their remote learning.  We will continue to support the school in other ways as we all navigate this challenging time.

We would love to get more people involved with NPHS.  Every parent has something valuable to contribute, whether it is time, talent, or treasure, and all of our children will benefit from this generosity.

Our first meeting of the year will be held on Wednesday, September 30th at 7:30 PM.  Please join us to learn more about NPHS! (Minutes are available on our Get Involved Page)

As the new co-presidents of NPHS, we look forward to working with you to make this another great school year!

Best,

Frances Blair, Co-President, NPHS

Mom to Maggie (Grade 3), Grace (K2), and Hazel (future Hurley Hawk)

Avida Michaud, Co-President, NPHS

Mom to Even (Grade 5), Owen (Grade 5) and Beckett (Grade 3)

Bienvenidos a Nuevo Año Escolar

Sinceramente,

Frances Blair
Co-Presidente, NPHS
Mama de Maggie (3er grado), Grace (K2) y Hazel (futuro alcon de Hurley)

Avida Michaud
Co-President, NPHS
Mama de Even (5o grado), Owen (5o grado) y Beckett (3er grado)
