Neighborhood Parents for the Hurley School

Welcome Back to School Year 2020/21

Dear Hurley Families,

On behalf of the Neighborhood Parents for the Hurley School, we want to welcome you to our community.

NPHS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that acts as the development arm of the Hurley School. We are current parents, community members, and volunteers who believe in bilingual public education and see the need to enhance the academic experience of all students at the Hurley. Our mission is to bridge the gaps in funding that the Hurley receives from the Boston Public School System.  The money we raise will pay for reading specialists, music education, classroom materials, social/emotional support programs, and more.  We have plans to invest in the school’s infrastructure (including the auditorium, playground and STEM rooms) as well as technology.

NPHS raises money through an annual appeal, and through fundraising events.  Due to COVID, this year will look different as we rely more on virtual events and experiences.  However, our mission remains the same: to raise funds to bridge the gap between the BPS budget and what Hurley students need and deserve during this time.  We have already helped provide paper books and other materials so that our students can start the school year off with supplies that will enhance their remote learning.  We will continue to support the school in other ways as we all navigate this challenging time.

We would love to get more people involved with NPHS.  Every parent has something valuable to contribute, whether it is time, talent, or treasure, and all of our children will benefit from this generosity.

Our first meeting of the year will be held on Wednesday, September 30th at 7:30 PM.  Please join us to learn more about NPHS!

Bienvenidos a Nuevo Año Escolar

End of School Year 19/20 Letter

Dear Friends of the Hurley,

As the school year wraps up, I wanted to reach out and thank you for your support of Neighborhood Parents for the Hurley School.  When students, teachers, and families gathered on the turf field last September, the school year began with joy, hugs, and a procession into the building.  Nobody would have predicted that, come June, our community would be saying goodbye to each other via Zoom.  One thing that hasn’t changed is the joy and excitement we see in our kids, and in their teachers, when they come together.  Even virtually, the spirt of the Hurley is strong, and I am grateful to be part of this community.

While the year wasn’t normal, the role NPHS played for the Hurley was as important as ever.  Neighborhood Parents for the Hurley School, an independent  501c3 whose mission is to bridge the gap between what Boston Public School budgets can provide and what our students deserve, funded important initiatives that made the school stronger.  These included reading interventionists that worked with small groups of students, and a residency by a dual language music teacher.  When the pandemic hit in March, NPHS offered its support to Principal Verano, and funded emergency food and supplies for our most vulnerable families.

As our fiscal year wraps up on June 30th, I am writing one last time to ask that you consider a gift to the Neighborhood Parents for the Hurley School.  Our signature spring fundraiser, TropiCaliainete, was canceled, so we are appealing to donors to consider a gift so we can continue to offer our support to the school.

While we don’t know what school will look this fall, we do know that the 350 children who attend the Hurley depend on our support, and deserve an excellent  bilingual education in a school that sparks joy.  NPHS had told Princiapl Verano that we will help with interventionists, arts education, training and materials for remote learning (if necessary), social /emotional support for students and families, and more.  In order to make the happen, we need your support.  Please consider a gift today.

I hope that you and your family have a healthy, happy summer.

Best,
Alicia Erickson

April 25 – Break a Sweat with Barre3 in Support of the Hurley School

Dear Friends of the Hurley School,

We hope that you and your families are staying healthy and in good spirits during these unprecedented times.

Neighborhood Parents for the Hurley School (NPHS) is committed to helping the most vulnerable in our school community. More than 70% of Hurley students are considered high need. In the past few weeks, NPHS has funded supplemental food/groceries for more than 20 Hurley families, and has offered its support to Principal Verano, as needs arise.

To keep this support going, we need your help and we hope you will join us for a fun virtual event to raise money for our amazing students and families.

We hope you can join us from the comfort of your home on Saturday, April 25th at 12:15pm for a virtual Barre3 class to benefit the Hurley School.

Let’s have fun and move together with Jenny Audia, Hurley parent, and our favorite Barre3 instructor.
